The Return of the Modern Philosopher

A Visit With Ti-Diana, Maine’s Easter Egg Making Witch

Earlier this week, I blogged about the important, yet secret role that Maine plays in the Easter Holiday.  Mainers weave the baskets and make some of the chocolate.  In addition, the Easter Bunny has his special grass grown on farms throughout the state and gets most of his marshmallow from Mt. Mallow, the magical volcano hidden deep in the woods of Northern Maine.

Maybe most importantly, though, one Maine Witch is responsible for almost 75% of the colorful Easter Eggs that go into the baskets and are used in Easter Egg Hunts.

“Well, I wouldn’t say I’m responsible for the eggs,” Ti-Diana corrects me with a charming smile.  “The chickens produce the eggs.  It’s my magic that ensures they come out all wonderfully colored and ready for use.”

Ti-Diana is the owner of Ti-Di Farms, which when not manufacturing special eggs for the Easter Bunny, is one of the biggest dairy farms in the state.  “I was fiddling with a spell during my seventh year at Hogwarts, and once I mastered it, I could get any number of chickens to lay Easter Eggs,” she explained to this Modern Philosopher.  “Professor Snape used to mock me in the early days when my spells would only get the chickens to lay hard boiled eggs.  The more he didn’t believe in me, the harder I worked.  So I guess we all owe a big thank you to the late, great Professor Snape, who was an excellent motivator and a master of spells.”

Ti-Diana is very secretive about the spell that makes the eggs.  “It’s not that I don’t trust other Witches,” she told me, “but rather, that I just like the process too much.  I consider myself an artist.  Truth be told, I’m being selfish and just like knowing that three-quarters of the Easter Eggs out there were created by my magic.”

Does she ever get the urge to have her chickens lay the colorful eggs year round?  “Of course, but The Easter Bunny compensates me well to provide them exclusively for his use, and his lawyers are pretty scary,” she replied to my query with her infectious laugh.

Before I left the farm, Ti-Diana was nice enough to autograph the tie dyed toga I’d worn in her honor.  She also presented me with a dozen farm fresh Easter Eggs.  There’s something quite enchanting about a woman who can give you fresh eggs…or did she just put a spell on me to make me think that?  Hmmmm…

Happy Easter!
