Friday Night Think Tank: I Get Around Edition

Doc BrownI don’t know if I’ve ever needed a Friday night to arrive as much as I have this week, Modern Philosophers.  Even though it was a short week, it very nearly was my Waterloo (please read tonight’s previous post about short weeks and the Napoleon Complex because it will make that line even funnier!).

Car problems took center stage this week, sending my stress levels through the roof.

Luckily, Zombie Car has risen from the dead yet again, but every time it dies, it makes me wonder if it’s time to finally bury an axe in its engine block to put it out of its misery forever.  Such Deep Thoughts generate Financial Stress Thoughts, and those are not any fun at all.

Let’s head over to the Think Tank, our cerebral sweat lodge, to conjure up some Deep Thoughts and work out our mental angst.  Don’t forget your Deep Thinking toga…

Since car troubles have dominated my thoughts for most of the week, I thought I’d work that into our topic.

This Week’s Topic: What is your dream form of transportation?  It doesn’t need to be real.  Just share with the group how you would get around if there were absolutely no limits on how you could do so.

I have never made a secret of the fact that I hate driving.  I don’t think it’s so much that I dislike the the actual task of sitting behind the wheel, as it is my hatred of being dependent on machines to get me from Point A to Point B.

Don’t worry, this won’t mutate into a Robot Apocalypse post and a rant against The Machines.  I truly believe the root of my driving issues is a fear of being stranded somewhere because my vehicle will not work…a fear based in fact as my car died on me again this week.

My flying phobias can be traced to a fear of something malfunctioning and the giant, heavy metal tube falling from the sky at an incredibly high rate of speed.

I worry that a boat will spring a leak.  That a train will get stuck in a tunnel.

I have always preferred to walk places.  No machines required for that.  No chance of a part not working.  I’d never get stranded anywhere on a walk because I’d never go anyplace that would be too far from which to walk back home.

Flying-manSo my dream mode of transport?  I want to be able to fly… and not because I have a jet pack strapped to my back, or because I’m in high tech Ironman armor.  I want to be able to fly on my own, totally independent of any technology.

Superman knows what I’m talking about.  I’d give anything to be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, to fly high above the accumulated snow, and to zip from one side of the continent to the other without having to first submit to a frightening security check.

So what about you, Modern Philosophers?  Is there a dream vehicle you’d love to possess?  Or is there some mode of transportation that exists only in your imagination?  Please share with the group.  There are no wrong answers here, so no one’s going to judge.

Especially not the man in the toga who wishes he could read your comments as he glides peacefully through the sky above The House on the Hill…

I have always wanted to fly. When I was young I had so many dreams about flying. I remember the feeling those dreams gave me. I could fly away from any and all problems and I was at peace. It would be dang cold up there in the winter, though.

I know about the cold. I’d dress warm, though, and would be warmed by the fact that I was above the snow that was piling up on the road, making driving perilous.

  6. Magic Carpet. DEFINITELY! The ability to dodge obstacles (like trees, buildings, automobiles) would be a standard feature. No more worries about dodging potholes, deer, other motorists. I could zip along above the traffic jams as well as the snow drifts, and simply roll up my carpet rather than having to find a parking space. In poor weather, it would magically keep me warm and dry as well.

i enjoy flying as well, have done so in my dreams. also love to walk and experience everything at eye-level. ultimate – to have both options available.

It has been a week of things malfunctioning for sure – clogged drains, broken thermostat on the range, dead light bulbs. I’m currently blaming everything on sunspots so I’m sorry the sunspots got to your car. As for transportation, if riding my bike to a destination is not possible I’d prefer to go by transporter a la Star Trek. There are times I just want to be somewhere and I don’t want to spend the time or resources traveling so being able to pop in and out with a transporter would be pretty darn nice.
Here’s hoping your auto gets over its sunspot affliction soon!

  9. Michelle says:

Well I see that I’m not alone, but I would love to be able to teleport.
