CHiPs and Salsa Dancing Parties The New Rage With Maine Teens

ponchThere’s a hot new trend sweeping through Maine, and all the hip kids are doing it, Modern Philosophers: CHiPs and Salsa Dancing Parties.

“CHiPs” is the classic 70s/80s TV show about the California Highway Patrol, which starred Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox.  The lovable hunks kept the freeways of Southern California safe, and the pretty ladies of the area even safer, if you know what I mean.

The show has suddenly found an audience with Maine’s youth, but they’re just not sitting around like couch potatoes and watching TV.  They’re gathering in open spaces like dance halls, gymnasiums, backyards, and abandoned mills to screen the show, set it to a hip, sexy salsa beat, and sweating their couch potatoes off as they dance along to the episodes.

Salsa danceNo one is quite sure how the trend began, but this Modern Philosopher has heard one rumor that a gaggle of teens were flipping through the channels one day and came across Ponch and Jon just as someone cranked up some salsa music on the stereo.  Inspiration hit, and amazing, synchronized things followed.

“The music and the dance has like totally become this wicked awesome soundtrack to the TV show,” one Milford teen told this Modern Philosopher as he toweled off during a commercial break.  “It’s also a great way to meet honeys.  Have you seen the way these girls can move?”

I certainly did notice.  I’ve never been much of a dancer myself, but the moves I saw being executed in this local gym while Ponch and Jon chased a fleeing bank robber through the outskirts of LA, were absolutely breathtaking and made me wish I had some sort of rhythm.

When reached for comment, Erik Estrada asked this Modern Philosopher, “Kids are really watching the show?  Is this that radio DJ again?  I told you to stop prank calling me!”

CHiPsHe really sounded excited about it, though.  I could not track down Larry Wilcox, and discovered that no one has heard from the actor in ages.  Most unfortunate because I planned to bring the former “CHiPs” stars to Maine to tell their new generation of fans about the show, and then do a little dancing of their own.

Once again, Mainers have proven that they are trendsetters, forever on the cutting edge, and as hip as a Maine Winter is frigid.

I’m looking forward to going to the next CHiPs and Salsa Dancing Party because I hear Stephen King plans to attend to do some research for a new book idea.  The only thing that could make these parties cooler is to have Mr. King put his unique spin on them.

Will I see you there, Modern Philosophers?
