Closing The Theater In Style

nite logoWhat a great night, Modern Philosophers, for my television writing career!

This evening’s taping of The Nite Show With Danny Cashman went extremely well.  Danny used so many of my jokes in his monologues that I actually lost count!

Right out of the gate, he used 5 or 6 of my jokes in the first show.  I’m not sure of the final count because there were a couple of jokes that he tweaked slightly by changing a couple of words, but they still count as mine, right?

The energy in the theater was very high.  It was the last taping at the theater that has been home to The Nite Show for almost 4 years, and people filled the place and turned out to say goodbye.

When the audience warm up guy asked the audience how many folks were first timers, I’d say about 75% of people raised their hands.  Word has gotten out that The Nite Show is on a roll, and the ratings prove that the show’s popularity is on the rise.

JessThe only low energy person in the place was the guest for the third show, and it was only a temporary power outage.  Jessica Gaynes, the former host of Nickelodeon’s “Wild & Crazy Kids” sat at my table while she waited to take the stage.  She had flown in from L.A. earlier in the week, and was clearly pooped from sightseeing in Maine.  She actually napped at the table while Danny did the monologue.

Before that, though, she had been up cheering wildly as she watched the taping of the second show.  Once she went up on stage, of course, she was full of life, charming, and witty.

I think I developed a bit of a celebrity crush tonight.

Some of the writing highlights of the evening: Danny used the joke I got up out of bed at 5AM to write this morning.  I was very pumped about that, especially since it was a Star Wars joke.

My joke referencing Back to the Future made the cut.  Danny tweaked this one slightly, but my good buddy Doc Brown’s famous car got its mention.

I think I’m most proud of the fact that for the last show ever to be taped at The Next Generation Theater, every joke in the monologue was written by me!  How’s that for being a piece of television history?

And, yes, Modern Philosophers, one of the jokes for the fourth show was about men wearing togas.  How awesome is that???

DannyDanny wrapped up the final show with an extremely touching tribute to the theater’s owner as he, along with several more accomplished singers, serenaded her with a parody of one of my favorite Billy Joel songs.  You’ll have to tune in to find out which one.

It was a really great night!  The Nite Show said goodbye to its old home in style.

I am thrilled that so many of my jokes will make it onto TV in Maine, and it is a privilege to be a part of such a fun, silly, and endearing show.  I hope you will tune in on Saturday nights to see the final product.

Now I can only hope that Jess from “Wild & Crazy Kids” was as moved by our meeting as I was…
