I Advise You That The Odds Are Forever In Your Favor

BlutoDear Modern Philosopher,

I was reading The Hunger Games books again over this long Independence Day weekend, and they totally gave me a better appreciation of the freedoms we have as citizens of the United States.

There’s no way I’d want to live in that kind of bleak, hopeless future where I’d be fighting to survive in one of the grim, scary districts.  Plus, I’m 16, so that would make me a prime candidate for the Reaping.  I would never survive in the Arena if I were picked to be a Tribute.

So this got me all to thinking, what if The Hunger Games are a peek into America’s actual future?  There’s always some bit of truth in fiction, right?  You’re a writer, so that’s true, isn’t it?  What if Suzanne Colline is on to something?  What if this is one of the last Independence Day weekends we ever celebrate before they chop us up into Districts?

How am I going to survive in that future?  I’m no Katniss Everdeen!!!

Looking To Avoid The Reaping

KatnissDear Looking,

Don’t fear the Reaping!

Sorry, I just had to use that line.  You might not even be old enough to get the reference.

I think it’s awesome that you are an avid reader with quite an imagination.  Reading should conjure up Deep Thoughts, and make you take another look at the world around you.  Clearly, you are doing something right.

Sure, there’s always a little bit of truth in any piece of fiction.  There is hunger in the world.  There are tyrannical governments that treat their citizens poorly.  There are crazy reality TV shows that people watch like they are addicted.

I advise you that the odds are forever in your favor, though.  You are not going to be called to a Reaping.  Our nation’s government isn’t going to collapse.  There’s not going to be a civil war.  The United States is not going to become Panem.

So keep reading your books, keep forming your Deep Thoughts, and maybe put some of your ideas on paper.  I think you have all the makings of a writer.

Enjoy what’s left of your Fourth of July weekend.  Maybe take some archery lessons just in case, as it’s always good to have a backup plan…

  1. I sure hope you are right. 😎

    Dear Austin,

It is a beautiful thing to see a world in such optimism, for this is the blessing of youth.

When you hit the job market, or even start your own business, or have been involved in examinations for academic qualifications you will experience the reaping where there are losers and winners. It may be there will never be Hunger Game style battles, but to survive in this reality you will have to fight or be destroyed. I employ people; I may have one job pursued by ten people; I shall have to test those ten people, nine will be eliminated and one shall be the winner.

At this moment your body is under attack by virus, fungi and bacteria; if those entities gain access and reproduce in your body you can die. Your body immune system is in a type of Hunger Game contest against these invaders.

At the age of 16 you live in a world that is totally unstable. Your USA in the last three years have passed laws that can at your Presidents command have you locked up on your own nations soil indefinitely, without trial. You can be legally assassinated by drones. You are amongst the most spied on citizens in the world, a huge database allows others to know more about you that you do about yourself. Even the most mundane of agencies in the USA have been stockpiling large quantities of ammunition.

The dollar you have is a piece of paper with a promise that the bank or Government will honor it when it is offered in payment, but they have no assets to support it but debt. The paper currency is worthless, only of value whilst people believe in the fantasy that it is worth something.

Your previous president George Bush invaded nations like Iraq and Afghanistan to make the world safer, but those nations have become even more unstable to the point that terrorists are building bombs, potentially getting hold of radioactive devices and creating viruses that can devastate entire US cities.

I am sorry to say that the world is far more dangerous and unstable that that portrayed in the Hunger Games, and what I have mentioned is only the a few of the problems that you will face.

Well, thanks for all that feedback!

What you say about the US of A is shockingly sad but true. I am not a US citizen and I am only here for education. The once great America everybody was talking about is in so much chaos right now. People and politicians are totally polarized and constantly angry. It’s so sad to see what is going on right now 😦

Austin, want to go pay Alex Jones a quiet visit when he’s sleeping?
