I have a wonderful bit of news to share, Modern Philosophers…
I have opened the doors of The House on the Hill to two adorable kitties who needed a home! It’s been almost a month since Banky left this world, and while I am still processing this loss (which includes crying as I type this), I have been driven mad by the silence.
For sixteen years, I have opened my home, my life, and my heart to stray cats who needed a loving home. After Banky left, I didn’t think I’d ever be able to do that again because losing those little purr balls was just so hard on me.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve realized that the saying “It’s better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all” applies to pets as well as to people. I knew there were kitties out there who needed someone to love them and save them. After much Deep Thought, I realized that Banky would want me to open The House on the Hill again.
Not to replace him, of course, because that would never be possible, but to continue the trail of love that has been a big part of my life for so long.
I thought that the first day of my vacation would be the perfect time to adopt some new balls of fur because it would give them plenty of time to adapt to their new home and to me with me here to watch over them.
This morning, I was at The Bangor Humane Society when the doors opened. I knew I wanted two kitties, so that they would be able to keep each other company when I was at work, and I definitely wanted to adopt a pair that had come in together and the staff did not want to separate.
As I suspected I would, I cried upon seeing all the adorable creatures in their cages, hoping that someone would love them enough to take them home. I wanted to adopt them all, but I knew that wasn’t feasible or at all sane. I tried to hide my tears, but after a while, I simply gave up and just let them flow. No point in not being myself, right?
I was overjoyed to see that so many of the cages had an “I have been adopted!” sign on them. That definitely made me feel better.
It became obvious pretty quickly, though, which kitties would be making the trip home with me. They were Cali, a one year old black female, and Panzier (that name was definitely going to change!) an 8 year old tiger female. They were the only two kitties who didn’t come to the front of the cage to greet me. They stuck together, seemed scared, and just stared at me.
Those were the ones. I knew I wanted to open my heart to two kitties that would have a hard time finding homes. Keren, the very nice BHS employee who helped me with my adoption, told me that the duo had been there the longest, and that she had fostered them when they’d come to the shelter. Keren assured me that although they appeared shy now, they were very loving kitties, and that little Cali went a little bonkers when her big sister wasn’t around.
That just sounded perfect. They have been running around The House on the Hill, checking out their new digs, and sizing up their Kitty Daddy. Right now, they are both up under my bed, so I thought I’d write about them while they got settled.
I’ve renamed the older one “Luna”. A little nod to Magic and Harry Potter seemed fitting.
I will post some photos of them once they sit still long enough, in a lighted area, for me to capture them on camera.
Even though tears have been flowing the entire time I’ve been writing this, they are tears of joy. My house is a home again! Purrrrrrrrfect!
Now that was the purrfect thing to do for all concerned! 😉
I thought so, too! 🙂
That is wonderful news! I’m so excited for all three of you. It is hard opening your heart up again but totally worth it. I know your new companions will appreciate their new loving home!
I just hope they come out from under the bed soon!
Haha! They will. You could always bribe them.
Well Cali just jumped up on the bed and let me pet her. When I tried to take a pic, though, she ran.
Clearly, these two have had previous issues with the paparazzi!
Clearly you did not talk to their agent or read the fine print: Photos are not guaranteed on day one of a new location. Clients must have opportunity of a full beauty rest and bath before appearances or photo shoots.
Everyone is pestering me for photos. I’m just trying to make them feel comfy and safe with me…
Yes that is priority number 1.
🙂
Outstanding!
Barky is very proud of you, Austin!
My heart leaps with joy for all three of you!
Thanks, Toby!
So happy for you – and your kitties. 😉
Thanks. They’ve come out a little and then gone back under the bed. It’s progress, though…
Aweeeeee!!! Yay! You’ll have to show us pictures of the purrrrrrfect new additions 🙂
As son as I can get them to pose!
Aw! Very sweet! Congratulations!
Thanks!
i’m so happy for all of you )
Thank you! I might just go under the bed with the kitties so I can spend time with them… 🙂
Congratulations!!!
Thanks!
Nice! You sound like us when choosing a pet. I pick the sickly and the runts, usually. Give them time and they will come out into the light. So happy for you!
Thank you! Thank you!
Congrats Kitty Daddy!!! That’s a great first day of vacation!
I had a cat named Luna – she’s the orange one curled up with her sister Xena in my post It’s a Cat’s World – Adjust. That was before the Harry Potter days but it seemed to suit her.
I hope your kitties and you are happy together.
You’ve done a wonderful thing!!!
Happy Kitty Vacation!!! 🙂
I’m slowly coaxing them out into the open. Luna seems like she’s totally judging me, though, and she’s still not sure I’m cool… 🙂
It will take time, she’ll figure it out very soon. Glad your vacation started so well. 🙂
Thanks! Luna slept on the bed last night, and Cali was up early playing with a toy, so more progress…
Austin, your adoption of two furry friends made my day. I visited the local Petsmart earlier today, to restock on pet food, noticed they had an adoption going on today. I wondered if all the kitties and dogs found homes today.
I hope so. The Bangor Humane Society waives the adoption fee on all kitties over 7 months old during the month of August. So many of the cages were marked that the occupants had already been adopted!
Reblogged this on SilentSoldier and commented:
I’m an animal lover and this warmed my heart! Hope it warms yours… Happy Saturday!

I’m a big baby at times. 🙂
Well, me tooooooo! 😆😆
🙂
I am dancing up and down with rings on my fingers and bells on my toes that you have adopted the two kitties who need to be together. Little do they know they have fallen into paradise, but they will soon find out,
I hope so. I look forward to many years and bonding and happiness!
I’m so, so glad 🙂 We got our current dog from the pound within about two days of having to put our gorgeous old dog down. It didn’t replace him but there is something reassuring to hear that animal sound in your house ♥
I look forward to seeing pictures!
I just took a few of Luna since she is now on the couch with me. I’ll post them on the blog once I get some of Cali, too…
Congrats on finding your new fur ball companions! Please send my greetings to Luna and Cali and tell them we all can’t wait to see their pictures and get to know them more through your little tales.
I will send them your greetings. Finally got some pics of Cali last night, so I will add some to a post today. 🙂
Congratz on the new kitties! life is boring without them…
Yes, it is! I’ve been running around chasing them and trying to keep them out of trouble!
