We are running out of August, Modern Philosophers.
As I look at the calendar on the wall, I see that we are on the last day of the final full month of Summer. What happened to the Summer of 2014?
It’s been a little chilly the last couple of days, which only seems to be rubbing sea salt into a wound that will soon be covered in snow given Maine’s usual weather patterns. August is supposed to be the hottest month, but it hasn’t felt that way at all this year.
Where’s this Global Warming we were promised???
How long until Snow Miser wakens from his hibernation to wreak havoc on the good people of Maine? Again I have to ask: What happened to the Summer of 2014?
Knowing that we were running out of August, I made sure to go out running.
I felt like I was chasing after Summer as I hustled down Eastern Avenue, my Running Toga flailing in the warm August wind. For once, the hot, sticky air was welcome and I relished the overabundance of icky sweat it produced. It meant that Summer wasn’t quite done with us yet.
I pushed myself further down my regular route today because even though this was my third run in four days, my legs felt good and I wanted to take advantage of the August weather. I was delighted to pass two other runners and a cyclist along the way, happy to know that others hadn’t given up on Summer, either.
After my run of 3+ miles, I decided to savor the Summer day by sitting out on the porch rather than rushing in to shower. The breeze had picked up at this point, and it was just cool enough to be comfortable without making me think Autumn was on its way.
I sat out there, legs up on the porch railing, singing along to my MP3 player, and milking every last second I could out of August. I know the sun is setting on Summer, and it’s rather gloomy outside right now, but this morning, I was a sweaty mess and loving it.
I hope you are getting every last bit of Summer out of August that you can, Modern Philosophers. I don’t know what happened to the month, but I just wish the Winter ones would pass this quickly.
I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun, soaking up the sun, and enjoying the perfect weather.
So long, August. Hurry back soon…
Come out to the West if you want the heat.
I used to live out there, but fled as LA drove me bonkers!
Oh yes, LA will do that to you.
The running silhouette is so cool, along with brilliant writing.
Thank you. Hope you’ll hang around the blog a little and look around. We’re all quite nice here and mostly harmless… 🙂
I could go for some global cooling. It’s 95 in my man cave, with 2 fans blowing, as I write this. I’m glad September’s almost here and October’s not far behind.
You’re killing me! You’re going to wake Snow Miser!!!
Sorry, don’t want to do that. Some party pooper sent him in my direction last winter. People stayed home four days from work and school for 1/2 inch of ice.
I’d like a mild winter this year…
I like the description of your run and your enthusiastic embrace of the sweat. I, too, had a sweaty run yesterday and meant to write about it but, alas, did not. I personally look forward to fall and cool but not cold weather. Unfortunately, I feel sure we will skip right to frigid temperatures. I grit my teeth and tell myself: shoveling snow burns calories, too.
Well, I went for a run this morning, and it was icky and humid and gross. Still Summer! 🙂
