Writer’s Day Snapple Society: 12/11/14

writers selfieHappy Writer’s Day, Modern Philosophers!

If you follow this blog regularly, you know that I have declared the day after a taping of The Nite Show With Danny Cashman to be a wonderful Holiday known as Writer’s Day.  I use the day to enjoy the post-show glow, to revel in the fact that I am a writer on a really funny television show, and to take some time to work on other writing projects.

This first photo is a selfie taken with fellow Nite Show writer, Dave Forbes Brown.  You might remember Dave as the man in the bib clamoring for his free lobster dinner in the Timbo sketch.

We sat down in front at The Gracie Theatre last night to lead the applause and laughter, and I thought it was time that The Nite Show’s writers got a little camera time.

It really was a great taping last night.  We taped the Christmas episode, the New Year’s Eve Special, and an episode that will air the weekend before Valentine’s Day.  Needless to say, we really had to run the gamut with our joke writing skills.

I was super pumped that Danny used one of my jokes about the new Star Wars trailer.  In the second show, he told three straight monologue jokes that were written by your favorite Modern Philosopher.  I’m going to refer to that as The Writer’s Hat Trick.

Miss MaineI got to meet the beautiful, talented, and new crowned Miss Maine, Heather Elwell.  She showed off her musical talents by playing the flute.  Heather also stayed for the taping of the last two shows, and posed for photos with audience members.  I thought that was very sweet.

I feel a little guilty for liking our new Miss Maine because my good friend Sara also competed in the competition this year.

Clearly, I wanted Sara to win, and she will always get my vote for Miss Maine, but I guess this just wasn’t her year.  You’ll get them next year Sara!  I believe in you.

The other high profile, but far less beautiful guest last night, was newly re-elected Maine Governor Paul LePage.

As you well know, Modern Philosophers, this blog supported Mayor McCheese in this year’s Gubernatorial Election, but just like in Sara’s case, this simply wasn’t the Mayor’s year.  He’s got my backing if he decides to run again in 2018, though.

Governor Governor LePage was a good guest.  He was funny at times and spoke his mind as usual.  You’ve got to give him credit for that.

He also brought a very nice ornament for The Nite Show’s Christmas Tree.

I took lots of photos last night, so I’m sure I’ll be sharing more about the taping with you over the course of the day.

For now, I am going to finish my Snapple and think about going back to bed.  I had to get up to drop off Zombie Car at the mechanic’s for its annual inspection, but the rest of my day is blocked off to just celebrate the fact that I am a writer.

Happy Writer’s Day!

  1. Is there a day for dudes like me? “National Guy With a Keyboard Who Writes Stuff Day”?

No wonder you make fun of that guy ; he definitely looks like he has had snout in trough….did you get miss maines number. 🙂

  3. Before you get the call from the zombie car mechanic (he’s not really a zombie, right?) check the Edmunds.com book value on zombie cars. You never know when it may be time to send it off to be a background heap on an episode of “The Walking Dead” if the needed repairs exceed the sentimental zombie value.

Florida doesn’t have an annual vehicle inspection but it makes you cringe when you stop at a light and can see right through the rusted piece of zombie car in the lane next to you. It’s a relief the real zombie’s apparently only walk and haven’t figured out how to drive while undead (DWU).

Sounds like a spectacular day to celebrate!

Louise beat me to the question about chatting up Miss Maine. Dorky guys are usually well tolerated by non-dorky women, based on my observations, so you may have had a shot 🙂

    Congrats on the hat trick!

  6. Thanks for sharing. Yes, Miss Maine is a looker–even better than I’d fantasized. Gov. LePage, not so much. His pose, I captioned–“Please, no more questions; or Thanks, I can’t eat another bite.” Enjoy Writer’s Day and get yourself a post-show glow tan.

You now know Miss Maine and a should-be Miss Maine, Austin. Go for it. Chinese dinner date proposal to either or both (one afer the other, not at the same time, please). Nothing to lose, sir.
