Try To Make It More Than Just A Good Friday…

BuddyIt’s Good Friday, Modern Philosophers!

That doesn’t mean you just have to settle for a good Friday, though.  Why not see if you can make it a great one?

It’s Friday, after all.  The weekend is finally here.  It’s supposed to be almost 60 degrees in Maine today.  A giant rabbit is bringing us baskets of candy and colorful eggs Sunday.

Of course, if you were raised by The Nuns like I was, you were taught that Good Friday is a very somber day.  Good Friday was when Jesus was crucified for our sins, and we were supposed to go to church and be very mournful about this.

We weren’t supposed to eat meat on any Friday during Lent, but on Good Friday, I think we were supposed to denounce meat altogether and only eat three saltines and drink water all day.  That was how serious things got for us poor, guilt ridden Catholics.

Now that I’m an adult, though, and thinking pretty much for myself (advertisers and the internet do still hold some sway over me!), I say that Good Friday should be a day of celebration.

What was it that the great twenty-first century writer Rebecca Black had to say about today?  “It’s Friday!  It’s Friday!  Gotta get down with Friday!”

Pope Francis gives the Christmas Urbi et Orbi Blessing at St Peter SquareEven Pope Francis agrees.  The Pontiff and I chatted about Good Friday last night via Skype.  “If this generation wants to celebrate Good Friday in a more positive manner, I don’t see what’s wrong with it.  Just be respectful, remember the significance of the day, and try to think ‘What would Jesus do?’ while you’re out there having fun.”

The Partying Pontiff wants you to have a great Friday, too, Modern Philosophers.  So just ignore the judgmental eyes of The Nuns, and enjoy yourself.  It’s been a long week, and you deserve to let your hair down and blow off some steam.

Remember, the Easter Bunny isn’t all stalkerish like Santa Claus.  He’s not watching you while you’re sleeping and awake, he’s not making a list and checking it twice, and he isn’t going to leave coal in your basket if you have too much fun on Good Friday.

Once you punch out at the end of the work day, make it your first order of business to turn this into something more than just a good Friday.

Good Friday only comes around once a year.  Make the most of it…

  1. Yes, hard not to smile on this Friday. I can actually go for a long WALK in temps over freezing today. My candy jar is full of peeps and jelly beans, and we gather with lots of family on Sunday to celebrate spring and being together. When I attended church as a child, I loved Easter Sunday for the white lilies and lilting music. And the gratefulness that the somber Friday was in the past. Happy Good Friday to you.

Happy Great Friday, Austin! My dear wife Karen and I are at the Syracuse airport, ready to board our flight to D.C. for a long Easter Weekend. Neil Diamond concert and seeing the cherry blossoms, and visiting old friends. That’s a great three days we’ve been planning since October. 🙂 Have a big one too, my friend.

  3. Don’t allow the old memories mess with your Good Friday. Have a happy Easter.

  4. I was brought up Catholic, but I never met a really mean nun. I didn’t go to Catholic school, though, so that might be the difference (I wanted to go for high school, because I thought maybe the kids there wouldn’t know I was social poison, but that’s a whole other memory). I just remember my mom saying we had to play quietly for those three hours on Good Friday, and I found that kind of interesting (and quite the challenge, especially with my siblings). But rock on, and have a Great Friday this year. I think I’ll open a bottle of wine as soon as I’ve made my blog post. Or, what the hell, maybe I’ll drink and type. It’s Great Friday, after all.
