Something Shiny For The Mantel

Ever since I was a wee lad, Modern Philosophers, it’s been my dream to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

I believe my Oscar lust was fueled at a very early age by watching the awards the year Star Wars was nominated.  To this day, I despise all Woody Allen flicks because Annie Hall beat out A New Hope for Best Picture.

Over the years, my dream has expanded to winning an Independent Spirit Award and an Emmy as my writing tastes and jobs have changed.

I might have also seriously craved an MTV Movie Award at one point, but only because the trophy looked so damn cool.

Alas, my writing career has never put me in a position to be nominated for such a prestigious award, let alone to have a chance to win one.

But I’ve never given up on my dream.  And that’s the moral of this story.  If you stop dreaming, then it is impossible for the dream to come true.

Last Saturday, I was sitting at the very table at which I’m writing this blog post, working on monologue jokes for the season premiere of The Nite Show.

I was interrupted by a call from Danny Cashman, the host of the show and my boss.  He asked if I was home because he needed to drop off something.  I proudly told him I was toiling on the monologue.

Moments later, Danny was at my door with a very intriguing looking package.

And when I opened it, I realized that hard work pays off and dreams really do come true..

The Nite Show, awards, writing, Modern PhilosopherI could not believe what I was holding after I’d removed the mystery item from the fancy box.

I was officially an award winning writer!

Danny had told us that The Nite Show had won the award this summer, but he had not divulged that we would be receiving our very own personalized trophy.

I didn’t know what to say.  I was stunned.  I was moved.

It was so damn heavy, but I held it proudly and did an acceptance speech right there in the foyer of The House on the Hill.  If I left you out of my speech, please don’t be offended.  I was caught by surprise and had nothing prepared!

I eventually went back to work on the monologue, but this time, I had my award next to me on the table.  They don’t tell you how much pressure is involved when a gold man watches your every move!

The Nite Show, writing, Modern PhilosopherI wanted to use the platform of my blog to once again thank Danny not only for presenting me with the award, but also for giving me a chance to join The Nite Show’s writing team.

I also want to congratulate Danny on the amazing job he does in following his dream and bringing it to life every Saturday night on televisions across Maine.

And I need to thank the entire Nite Show Family.  How cool is this, guys?  Someone thought all our hard work was worthy of an award!

Being a writer is often quite the challenge, but that only makes the rewards that much more enjoyable.

Never give up on your dream, Modern Philosophers.  You never know when there might be a knock on your door that confirms that continuing the chase was well worth it!
