Sand Witches, Maine’s Magical Luncheonette, Opens For The Summer

Witches CookingEvery July 1, something magical happens in Downtown Bangor.  The vacant shop next to Three Toads and a Wicked Lady, Maine’s most popular Witch Bar, transforms into Sand Witches, Maine’s favorite luncheonette.

To celebrate the Grand Reopening, the diner’s owners sent a Flying Monkey to tap on my bedroom window and deliver a delicious breakfast sandwich.  For the record, this Modern Philosopher has no problem being awakened early for this reason (you could learn something from this, Mr. Sunday Morning Lawnmower Man!).

Sand Witches is owned by Mourning Glory, Aurora Story-Alice, and my good friend Waltzing Matilda.  Their enchanted menu features the best sandwiches ever conjured up in any kitchen, finger lickin’ barbecue (magic fingers actually lick your face playfully after you’re done with your meal), and a selection of desserts that are so decadent, one would assume the place was run by Wicked Witches.

Witches TeaThe establishment is also known for its High Tea, served every day at 13:00 (that’s 1:00pm for those of you who are confused by military time).  Witches fly in from all over the state to enjoy tea time, and there’s absolutely no truth to the rumor that they always end up raising a ruckus next door at Three Toads and a Wicked Lady right around midnight!

The recipes have been passed down over the centuries and somehow improved upon by each new chef.  Even if you don’t see something you want on the menu, just ask.  The owners guarantee they can whip up anything your heart desires.  Just NEVER ask for a well done steak!

“The last customer to ask for a burned steak was turned into a frog!” Waltzing Matilda cackles in delight at the running joke.

The hosts are always happy to show off a spell or two to their young guests, and every once in a while, Mourning Glory will take a lucky diner for a spin around Bangor on her broom.

black catAnd before you go, make sure you stop by the counter to say hello to Dorothy, the beautiful black cat who watches over the diner and makes sure too much mischief never occurs.

Dorothy might hiss at you, but that’s just her special way of thanking you for visiting.

Sand Witches is open 7 days a week, but it vanishes the day after Labor Day, so don’t miss out on your chance to enjoy some of the best food in Maine.

Tell them I sent you, and they’ll even take 15% off your bill!

Dang it..I’m to late to make it this year. If only I had known about this event! I’ll absolutely come to Maine next year on July 1.. I can’t wait to meet Waltzing Matilda! Maybe she’d conjur me up a drink at Three Toads and a Wicked Lady!

Up until October I actually owned a place called The Sand Witch on the Asbury Park (NJ) boardwalk. It blew away during hurricane Sandy. Maybe it ended up in Kansas. LOL. –>

Pretty far to go for me to get sand witch but it sounds like a romping good ole time. Can’t say I’ve ever been to Maine even.

I don’t think I can possibly take advantage of this 15% off privilege. If they’d accept deliveries, the yummy sandwiches would be cold and hard by the time they reach our archipelago. 🙂
