Anyone who knows me is aware that I have a major crush on Time Travel, Modern Philosophers. I’ve always wanted to ask it out, but have never been able to muster up the courage to make eye contact, let alone pop the question.
One time, I got bold and wrote Time Travel a note. I still remember the words as if I’d only just made them up this very moment for this blog entry: “I’ve always liked you, if you like me, too, meet me at the Old Clock Tower at midnight”.
As luck would have it, there was a massive storm that night, a bolt of lightning hit the clock tower, and 1.21 gigawatts of heartbreak later, Time Travel never made an appearance…
You don’t need to be a screenwriter to appreciate how the screenplay for Back to the Future is an almost perfect piece of writing. It is the ultimate piece of storytelling, and is often used in screenwriting books to teach the craft. I’d like to give a quick shout out to Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale for their amazing story.
I’ve tinkered with Time Travel ideas, but it’s too daunting a subject to tackle when the perfect screenplay on the subject has already been written.
But I’m rambling again. The whole point of this sorted love confession was to discuss that tonight is the one night a year we truly do get to time travel. I was texting my friend who lives in the Central Time Zone, and I reminded her that at two hours past midnight here in Maine, her and I would actually both be living at 1:00AM. Cooooool!
If you are willing to stay up for a few hours after midnight (you can suffer through an episode of Saturday Night Live, which might actually not be too bad tonight), you can relive 1:00AM – 2:00AM because of the whole “Death to Daylight Savings Time” thingy we do tonight.
Think about it. You can live those 60 minutes over immediately after having just lived them. What would you do differently? What would you not change? Why does anyone choose to sleep and miss out on that free hour of life? Ridiculous!
So there’s no need to steal plutonium, refurbish a DeLorean, or risk having sex with your teenage mother. Just put on a pot of coffee, stay awake, and you will travel back in time.
As exciting as the moment is, all this Modern Philosopher wants to know is if he got up the courage to ask Time Travel for a coffee, would it join him?

The Return of the Modern Philosopher 
I call my mom in Nevada (20 minute drive away) and begin with ‘I’m calling from the fuuuuuuture’ We don’t observe the time change in my neck of the Arizona woods (cacti?). Denied the time travel package!
You ever tackle the time travel genre, I’ll be more than happy to ‘notice’ all the plot holes. LOL! I know, I know, ‘Suspension of disbelief’.
Time travel is real! You need to accept that. In fact, we’ve already had this conversation…three weeks from now! 😀
I like that idea. When daylight saving happens here, I wake, look at my clock, then go back to sleep for another hour, wake – and it’s the same time! Technically. Not only that but it’s got groundhog day overtones…
I can see that you are a fellow Modern Philosopher. Time travel is fun, even if we choose to sleep through it. 🙂
Was that confession sorted, in order to keep track of it amongst a large number of confessions or is it, perhaps, that you simply don’t want to admit how sordid it was?

Aha again! Well, in that case, it’s all good. Now, if zombies are a problem for you, for a modest fee I might be able to hook you up with someone who could “fix”, your problem. Eh, eh?
And now for something almost completely different. Many moons ago, a friend of mine bought a really big chunk of property up in Maine. He has long since sold it off but, for a while, he and his wife lived in the old farmhouse that was part of the property.
Town called Steuben. Nearest landmark I can remember is Schoodic Point. Anyway. I have some very fond memories of Maine. One of my great regrets is that I didn’t avail myself of some of that property when my friend was selling.
I don’t know what it’s like up there these days. Haven’t been there in many years. But, if it’s even half what it was then, enjoy it while it lasts.

Smart and entertaining! Many thanks. ‘The Time Machine’ and ‘Sliding Doors’ were interesting explorations of Time Travel and multiple Timelines. Quantum Physics has a lot of insights into the nature of Space and Time. Meditation and stillness introduces us to the Eternal Now. Reincarnation is Time Travel and Deja vu is recognizing that you’ve travelled a certain Timeline before. I’m enjoying the great Adventure. Hope you are too!

Well, we see the past everyday. The sun that we see is 8 minutes old. The people moving about have done things that you think they are doing ‘now’ in the past, just a few milliseconds ago. And if you can see the past, should you not be able to see the future too?

I liked the very complicated movie, “Inception.” I also liked the “Back to the Future” movies. I hope you can come up with a unique spin on the theme of time travel!
Inception was cool visually, but I think the plot got too complicated. Back to the Future was just fun…a well-written script, an easy to follow story, and likeable characters. Plus, that Doc Brown is a handsome dude! 😉
Anybody who writes movies, roots for the Yanks, and shovels a lotta snow has gotta be cool, even without the funny goggles…

I don’t know… I have mixed feelings on time travel. Bill & Ted made it seem pretty awesome, but Somewhere In Time made it seem very sad…

I think it’s because men are always late, hence the need to travel through time… 🙂
Then my mother may be a man… 😡 What a thoroughly disturbing thought! Oh, well…I guess I’ll have to settle for the little bit of time travel Hermione Granger did…even if she just did it to get a few more coarse credits under her belt. It did end up helping to save Buckbeak & Harry Potter.
Maybe I’ll just have to write a female driven time travel story then… 🙂

I had a loving, beautiful rottie/shepard mix I’d adopted from the humane society a few months before. She would lay on my feet as I worked in my home office and I knew she was going to be “THE” dog of my life. I didn’t have a fence around my property then, and she would stay with the other dogs without a problem. I had a meeting to attend about 2 hours away. A few miles down the road, I remembered something and doubled back.. I rounded the corner a block from my home to find a black dog by the side of the road. My beautiful new companion was running after the car and got hit so hard her collar flew 10 feet in front of her. I knelt down beside her and cried at the stillness, nothingness that now surrounded her. If I had to do it all over again, I never would have gone to that party.
That last word should be “meeting.” I think I’ve written too many halloween poems recently.
I’m so sorry for your loss…
That was 20 years ago. That’s the only event in my life I can think of that I would have wanted to have that 60 minutes to live over again.

I’m a fan of Kurt Vonnegut’s description of mirrors as being “leaks in the universe.” Perhaps that hour, lost in the spring, transcended space and time, through the previously mentioned leaks in the universe, only to return in the fall?

I’ve heard few recent stories about WordPress posts doing some time-traveling: you click Publish, and your post shows up as posted several hours ago. This even happened to one of my posts – so obviously, time travel is real.
That is weird. Maybe they are experimenting with Time Traveling to make this a more enjoyable experience. Do we also get to Time Travel to read them? 🙂
