Oh, The Weather Outside Was Frightful!

icy roadOh, the weather outside was frightful,

So my commute was not delightful,

But since I’ve got to go to work,

I’ll drive in an ice storm like a jerk…

I was in a good mood when I left The House on the Hill this morning, Modern Philosophers.  You read my morning post, so you know I’d gotten up early and cleared away the snow and ice in the driveway.

The roads were looking good, the temperature was supposed to rise into the 40s, and the snow/freezing rain (aka Frow) was supposed to change over to rain and then be gone altogether.

I figured it would be an easy drive to work.

Boy, was I mistaken…

icy signThe ice storm started as I was walking to the garage.  By the time I had backed Zombie Car out of the garage and closed the garage door, ice had formed on all the windows.

I blasted the defrosters, grabbed the ice scraper from the backseat (it is always handy!), and braved the downpour to clear all the windows.

The defrosters kept the windshield and the back window clear, but the other windows were covered in ice by the time I got down the block.  I had no other choice but to drive with the two front windows open.  Otherwise, I could not see oncoming traffic when turning or merging onto the highway.

So it was 25 degrees, ice was falling from the sky, and I was doing 30 mph on the highway with the defrosters blasting at 77 degrees and the windows wide open.

I stayed in the slow lane and let the taillights of the pickup truck ahead of me guide me down the highway.  When the pickup exited, I just maintained my slow, steady pace until I finally reached my exit.

Ice_road_saimaaNeedless to say, it was a stressful commute.  I eased down the last quarter of a mile to the office, and pulled into a parking spot.

I then scraped the ice off all the windows, and kicked the slushy build up from where it had nestled in all the tire wells.

When I finally got inside the building, I turned on my phone to check my messages.

One text.

From Snow Miser:

“Happy Hump Day, Toga Boy.”

Please excuse the lack of a silly, Christmas themed post tonight, Modern Philosophers.  I just needed to vent a little about Snow Miser’s early Christmas gift.

He’s too much..

    Too much.

Glad you got there and back in one piece (physically, if not mentally).

I’m not sure where my mind is. Just glad Zombie Car is in the garage and I am safe and sound with the kitties inside The House on the Hill. 🙂

  2. JED says:

Snow miser is up to something this year I do believe. He might be planning to be even more annoying than usual. Sorry he seems to have it in for you but glad you are staying safe and warm. We are here for you weather you need to vent or make us laugh.

  3. I do not enjoy white knuckle driving 😦 Glad you made it safely.

  4. Louise says:

Man up Austin. Your acting like ‘a girl’ to get over it just FACE OFF with the snow miser and your scaredy cat driving. Go do a defensive driving course. or get an armoured car. 🙂
or move to a snow free environment. like the bahamas

  5. JackieP says:

I hate driving in ice storms! Or blowing, drifting snow. Gives me a tension headache, then I get home and have a good strong cup of coffee and feel better. Hope you relaxed with the kitties and that Snow Miser leaves you alone for a day or so.

  6. D. Parker says:

So glad you’re ok. Ice is not ice, walking or driving. Take care. 🙂

  7. Louise says:

    you need to relax your
hands on the steering wheel, have them in the ten to two position. At least you guys have your roads cleared and salted. in our mountains it is basically scrapped and thats it. It looks pretty light in photo. 🙂

My driving is definitely getting better. It’s my nerves I need to work on. If I could just get my anxiety under control about the drive, I’d be so much better…

Winter driving is always a headache no matter how you slice it… This is a case where patience being a virtue really applies! As for the annoyance? There’s always car-ma :O)

I hate it, too, Austin, as I’ve told you. But one think I’ve found that helps is to keep your speed consistent. Too much accelerating and braking is bad. Pick your safe speed and stay at it.

Anxiety – another over used word of 21st C. poppycock. pish pish!!! try deep breath OHM OHM OHM .. Why did you move to Maine if you hate driving in snow???. But then better than stinky so cal. or blazing hot texas.

Thanks, Austin, for reminding me how little I miss Minnesota (1946-1968) and Massachusetts (1968-1992) now that I’ve just celebrated 22 years and two days down here in SW Florida. High temp today was 81 — but with the windchill it felt like only 74. (Did that help at all?)

PS. My father taught me to drive out on our frozen MN lake. Came in real handy driving a cab in Bahston in the late ’60s and in the Blizzard of ’78. Sure glad those days are over.

You’ve got my deepest sympathy (but only historical, vaguely remembered empathy).

    Yikes! One word, California!

  13. jaypochapin says:

…And now you know why the family and I ultimately relocated to Middle Tennessee, where the schools shut down if it is merely PREDICTED to fall below freezing overnight! Spent plenty of years in PA, MA, and upstate NY driving in that stuff… I feel ya, Bro!…

  14. The Hook says:

I HATE winter but your posts warm my frozen Canadian heart, Austin.
