I know I haven’t written in you much since I went to see Gone Girl. That movie opened my eyes to the fact that you are probably the most boring diary in existence. No one is ever going to be framed for murder because of your contents, and your discovery is not going to lead to a national manhunt.
I’m okay with that, though.
It’s New Year’s Day, and we need a cold open to set the tone for the new year. I had planned to ring in 2015 with a first post that was an elaborate musical bit featuring all of the characters that frequent The House on the Hill of a regular basis.
I know that would’ve excited all the amazing Modern Philosophers who read my blog, and gotten their year off to a raucous start, but it just seemed too predictable. It’s something I would’ve done in 2013 when this blog was still new and trying to find its voice.
I thought back to my days at NYU Film School because that’s where this whole “taking writing seriously thing” really took shape. One of the most important lessons I remember from my first Screenwriting class was “less is more“.
Because of that, I am going to kick off 2015 with an intimate post from my bed. I’m just going to share my innermost thoughts with you, Diary, rather than hiding behind the army of silly characters who I usually lean on to help me convey my Deep Thoughts to the Modern Philosophers.
What’s on my mind is that 2015 had better be as warm and comforting as it is under my covers right now. The year should also metaphorically have two purring kitties on the bed to help me smile.
I’m closing the laptop and going back to sleep. Not because I am a lazy bum with no ambition, but because 2015 is going to be such an amazing year that I need to get some sleep whenever I can.
Happy New Year, Modern Philosophers!
